From his initial appearance on the scene in 1944, Art Donovan was a rugged and courageous football player, who quickly established himself as one of the most exciting players in the National Football League during his eleven-year career. The son of an Olympic sprinter, he was born in Chicago and played football at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He signed with the Green Bay Packers and in 1944, played in the National Football League (NFL) all season and led Green Bay to a NFL Championship. He continued to play for Green Bay through 1947 and then signed with the New York Giants where he played for three seasons
In 1951 he was traded to the Chicago Cardinals where he played two seasons before retiring from professional football. After football Art Donovan worked as an investment banker for Merrill Lynch Company. He was also involved in commercial real estate development, including building luxury apartments in New York City.
