Archibald Geikie was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1835. He was educated at Glasgow University, where he obtained his degree in classics, and at Geneva University. In 1858 he became professor of geology at the University of Edinburgh. In 1861 he was appointed professor of geology in the United States
He founded the science of geomorphology and became known as the "father" of sedimentary geology. As director of the US Geological Survey, Geikie conducted many important surveys throughout the country. He became a member of the American Antiquarian Society in 1878.
