Anthony Minghella was born in London, England, in 1959. At the age of 18, he joined the National Youth Theatre, where he met his future longtime collaborator, director Matthew Puffett. Their first collaboration was an adaptation of the film Forbidden Love (1984), for which both received their first BAFTA Award nomination. They went on to make a series of short films together including The Godsend (1985), Isadora (1988), and The Talented Mr
Ripley (1999). In 1992, Minghella made his feature film directing debut with Truly Madly Deeply, for which he received a BAFTA nomination and a Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award. His second feature film was the international sensation The English Patient (1996), for which he won a second BAFTA Award and a British Independent Film Award.
He then directed three more feature films: The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Cold Mountain (2003), and The Constant Gardener (2005). In 2007 Minghella was awarded an Honorary CBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for Services to Film and Arts.
