A.N.L. Munby was born in London, and first worked as a journalist on the "Daily Mirror", before training as a nurse. She joined the Women's Royal Army Corps in 1933 and served throughout World War II until she retired as a Major in 1946. After the war, she served as an administrator for mental hospitals and as a member of the National Council for Mental Health
She edited and published her memoirs, "The Story Behind Those Smiles: A Nurse's Personal Experiences of War and Peace" (London: Hodder & Stoughton). She was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1948 and died in 1968 at the age of 63.
