Anaximander was a Pythagorean philosopher from Miletus, who lived from 610 to 545 BC. His philosophical ideas were expressed in works which have been lost to us, except for a few fragments. We know that Anaximander believed that the cosmos was made up of eternal substances, and that the fundamental stuff of the world was fire. He realized that the earth was a sphere and held that all matter came into being by condensation of air, but he held this belief with great suspicion
Anaximander also noted that earthquakes were caused by underground water pressure. His earth-centred cosmogony is thus reminiscent of the views of the Presocratics, with whom he has sometimes been associated in modern times.
