A. N. Jones was born in 1915 and began his career as a journalist in 1933. His first novel, The Dark Road (1943) was inspired by his time as a soldier in the British Army during World War II
This was followed by several successful historical novels, including The Golden Lion (1961), which won the Enid Bennett Award, and The Golden Cloth (1970), which won the Enid Bennett Award, the Shiela Kirkup Award, and the Somerset Maugham Award for fiction. He is one of only three authors to have won both the prestigious Booker Prize and the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for his contribution to literature - the other two are Graham Greene and Penelope Fitzgerald. Jones also wrote two children's novels, The Wind Horse (1959) and The Rainbow Man (1967).
