in 1901. In 1910, Allama Iqbal received the Ph.D. degree from Columbia University, New York City, USA., where he had been a student since 1900.

He taught at various colleges in the United States and Canada before returning to India in 1923. He was appointed Professor of English at Aligarh Muslim University in 1930 and became the first President of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College there in 1936. Later he returned to Pakistan where he held the post of Vice Chancellor of the University of Al-Azhar in Cairo for two years.

He remained in this position until his death on November 9, 1938.
