His first article was published in 1900. He became a member of the Austrian Psychoanalytic Society in 1902 and its president in 1926. In 1911 he founded the International Association for Individual Psychology (IAIP), which soon had more than 100 members from 16 countries.

In 1933 Adler became a member of the Nazi Party. His book, “Individual Psychology” (1912) was banned by the Nazis because it criticized National Socialism. After World War II he was forced to leave Austria and he moved to Switzerland where he died on May 5, 1960.
