Alexander Dubcek was born in 1919 in Ústí nad Labem, Czechoslovakia. He became the president of Czechoslovakia in 1968, and simultaneously the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. While re-examining the Marxist ideology, he introduced some reforms that eventually led to the downfall of the Eastern Bloc. The Prague Spring brought about an end to forty-eight years of communism in Czechoslovakia, which also inspired many other countries to follow suit
Dubcek's downfall, however, did not occur until his re-election in 1969; he was deposed by Leonid Brezhnev on November 18th.
