Alessandro Manzoni (26 March 1785 – 27 August 1873) was an Italian poet, playwright, novelist, literary critic, and philosopher. He is sometimes known as the "Father of the Romantic Italian Novel". His works are noted for their psychological depth, their artistic power, and their influence on the modern novel. The novel I Promessi sposi (The Betrothed) is often considered to be one of the masterpieces of world literature.
