Albert Pinkham Ryder was born in 1873 in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. He graduated from Amherst College in 1898 and from Harvard University in 1900. He became professor of Botany at Amherst College where he taught for many years.

In 1917, he was elected President of the New England Botanical Club for a term that lasted until 1920. His main interests were in tropical plants and their study. Albert married Eliza Argyre in 1893, and she became known as "the Pink Lady".

They had three children: David, Arthur and Alfred. In 1919, Albert received an honorary Doctorate from Fairhaven College. Albert died on August 3, 1928 at his home in Fairhaven from pneumonia.
