He attended Oxford University for two years but left without completing his degree. He then traveled through Europe before settling in St. Louis where he became a lawyer.

He also played the organ at St. Louis churches and made music for the St. Louis Masonic Lodge before becoming blind in 1836.

When he died on February 19, 1891, he left behind approximately 40 volumes of unpublished writings; these volumes were published posthumously by the French government as "La Maçonnerie Mystique de Albert Pike".
