Albert Bigelow Paine was the founder of the American Society for Psychical Research (ASPR), the first American society to scientifically investigate psychic phenomena. His research on parapsychology led him to acquire his Ph.D. in philosophy at Columbia University in 1899, which proved useful in his later investigations of psychical phenomena, including telepathy and clairvoyance. Paine had a long career in publishing before he retired from political life in 1904 to focus on psychical research
In 1911 he founded the Philosophical Research Society, a precursor to the ASPR, and served as its second president until 1916. He also founded the American Society for Psychology and served as its first president until 1917. In 1909 Paine became the Director of the International Institute for Psychological Research, an organization that eventually became known as The Parapsychological Association, now known as the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena (ASSP).
