He has written numerous magazine articles for such magazines as Reader's Digest, Good Housekeeping, McCall's, The Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, Woman's Day, Ladies Home Journal, The Christian Science Monitor and Reader's Digest. He has also written numerous books on leadership and management. Alan Wolfelt was born in New York City and raised in Philadelphia.

He attended Haverford College and graduated from New York University with a B.S. degree in economics and political science. He worked as a writer for the Community Service Society of New York from 1950 to 1952.

After working as a writer for television news programs from 1952 to 1954, he became a freelance writer until 1961 when he began writing full time after receiving a small book advance from Doubleday.
