Born in Martinique, he spent his childhood in Saint Domingue, now Haiti, and was brought up in a Creole-speaking household. He eventually moved to France to pursue a career as a writer after being refused French citizenship. In addition to being a poet, he was also an essayist, dramatist and photographer.
