from Stanford University in 1967, and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1970, all in Chemistry. From 1970 to 1972 he was a research associate and assistant professor at the California Institute of Technology before taking a faculty position as an assistant professor and eventually as an associate professor in 1973.

From 1982 to 1984 he was a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Goettingen, Germany. In 1984 he became a full professor at Caltech and has been there ever since. In 1988 he was named the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Chemistry and then in 2002, Professor Emeritus at Caltech with emeritus status as of January 1, 2007.
