A.H. Scott was one of the most important and influential figures in the history of modern Japanese print culture. A prolific publisher and editor, Scott was a publisher at the Waseda Shoseki newspaper company from 1933 to 1951, and then became an editor at Asahi Shimbun (one of Japan's two major newspapers) from 1951 to 1972, eventually becoming the chief editor until his retirement in 1972. He is also considered one of the founders of modern Japanese literary criticism, having published widely on such writers as Ueda Akinari and Akutagawa Ryunosuke.
