Abu Bakr was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad, and he was one of the people to whom Muhammad entrusted the task of compiling the Qur'an. He was a contemporary of the other two scribes, Zayd ibn Thabit and Ubay ibn Ka`b, who completed the Qur'an during Muhammad's lifetime. Abu Bakr was an Arab from Mecca, but when he converted to Islam in 614, his name became Abd-Allah, "servant of Allah."
