A. E. Waite was born in 1857 in New York City. He attended the City College of New York and went on to become an editor and publisher
In the 1890s he became interested in Jungian psychology, and in 1899 he joined the Theosophical Society. He became secretary of the Society in 1902, and in 1914 he published his first book, The History of Magic, which was an anthology of ancient magical texts.
